Colne Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club – Jan 2020

Colne Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club – Jan 2020

The Colne Armed Forces & Veterans Club started the new decade with busy breakfast morning at The Crown Hotel in Colne.

As well as regular members, they were joined by a representative from the Burnley Armed Forces & Veterans Club and a representative from the Lancashire Armed Forces Covenant Hub. A very well attended social gathering to kick off 2020. Of prime importance, of course, is the breakfast, socialising (and beer!).

The Veterans are heavily involved in various events in Colne & the local area … the most obvious one being Remembrance Day.  In 2019, they made sure that our Remembrance Parade & service went ahead as usual in Colne & other local towns.  It’s fair to say that without their efforts in 2019, there would have been no Remembrance Day parade in Colne or Barrowford. (This stems from the cutbacks in policing – many other villages and towns were not so lucky).  They are working with Colne Town Council to ensure that the Remembrance Day event continues.

The Colne Armed Forces & Veterans Club also arranges various trips and other social events – there’s always something going on!

Now to the formal bits of the meeting … The existing Chairman, Ben Robinson, stepped down and the new Chairman, Eddie Lyle (nicknamed “Sugar”), appointed Cath Mitton as the Vice Chair following a quick vote. James Ellis, Club Secretary, presented a plaque to the exiting Chairman (Ben) and a bouquet of flowers to his wife Kath for all their hard work in 2019. A plaque was also presented to Tony Davies, for his contribution to the club over the years and also to his wife, Yvonne.

Breakfast before anything else!

Outgoing Chairman – Ben Robinson
Presentation to the outgoing Chairman, Ben Robinson, for all his hard work and, of course, flowers for his partner for her support.

Presentation to Tony Davies (who originally set up the group)
Tony Davies originally setup the Colne Armed Forces & Veterans Club about 5 years ago with fellow veteran Glen Colhoun. Tony said,

“I originally set the club up along with my partner in crime, Glen Colhoun. The club will be 5 this year (2020), but without the support of you all it wouldn’t be what it is today. Special mention to Ben Robinson and Jimmy Ellis. Looking forward to the events in the future!”

Guest attendee Ian Barber of Lancashire Armed Forces Covenant Hub remarked,

“Colne – by far – is one of the busiest, most active and most organised of the Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Clubs that he had visited.”

The Colne Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club are a group of veterans & serving members of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Like other Veteran’s Breakfast Clubs around the country & overseas (you can find a club in your area here: http://www.afvbc.net/find-a-club/), our ethos is mutual support and it works because we all have a similar humour & outlook. The social life we now enjoy is like our service days. Our club meets on the first Saturday of the month, from 10:00 onwards at: The Crown Hotel, Albert Road, Colne, BB8 0QD.

We also meet socially at Regimental/Association Dinners, for nights out, BBQ’s, parties, family occasions, Summer Balls, Christmas parties, & we network among the variety of trades we all now work in.

All services veterans (if you can cope with the banter), are free to turn up on & you will be made welcome.
